Crucial Phase Begins in Restoring Water Supply in Azuero Region

Panamanian authorities begin disinfecting water plants in Los Santos province after a six-month contamination incident. Water supply will be temporarily interrupted; residents are advised to stock up.

This Wednesday, December 17, marks a crucial phase in the process of restoring water for human consumption in the Azuero region. This step is necessary following a contamination incident that occurred approximately six months ago, affecting three water purification plants in the area. As part of this process, the Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (Idaan) will begin the disinfection work at the Rufina Alfaro purification plant, located in the province of Los Santos. These activities will extend until Friday, December 19. During this period, there will be a total interruption of the water supply in communities such as: Los Olivos, El Bongo, La Villa de Los Santos, Llano Largo, El Ejido, Santa Ana, Guararé, Las Palmitas, and Las Tablas, among other areas that depend on this plant. To serve the population, water supply will be maintained through tanker trucks, and reserve tanks will be available in parks and specific community areas. Authorities urge the public to stock up in advance and use the resource responsibly. The regional director of Idaan in Los Santos, Julissa de Gracia, explained that this procedure is necessary to advance the recovery of the system, reiterating that once the plant disinfection is complete, the water will remain unsafe for human consumption until the cleaning and disinfection of the distribution lines is finished. Authorities reiterated the call for the public to stay informed and follow recommendations while this process is underway to ensure a safe water supply in the Azuero region.
