Panama has approved a bill to extend healthcare center hours. Law 19, also known as the 24/7 law, was passed in its third debate in the National Assembly. It was proposed by Deputy Betserai Richards and led by the Commission on Labor and Health, Edwin Vergara. The bill now awaits executive approval. Richards stated the goal is to improve the healthcare system by offering services at hours convenient for the population. Health Minister Fernando Boyd Galindo has expressed support for the initiative. Vergara, meanwhile, confirmed he discussed the project with the minister but noted that implementation requires time. Boyd reported that an extended schedule is already in place at 120 health facilities nationwide and will be coordinated based on staff, supplies, and budget. Deputy Benicio Robinson called the project a fulfillment of the state's duty to provide healthcare access, especially in remote areas. Carlos 'Tito' Afu also backed the initiative, stressing the need for assistance at any time. The bill aims to prevent hospital overcrowding by providing 24/7 or extended-hour medical care in primary centers, policlinics, and MINSA-CAPSI, with services guaranteed on weekends. At least one such facility will operate in each region.
