The National System for Civil Protection (SINAPROC) immediately activated its monitoring and verification protocols, deploying personnel to inspect hospitals, critical infrastructure, and strategic points in the provinces of Bocas del Toro and Chiriquí following the earthquake recorded this Saturday. The actions include the preventive evaluation of health facilities, coordination with security forces, and continuous monitoring of citizen reports, with the goal of guaranteeing public safety and the operability of essential services. According to the Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama, on February 28, 2026, at 12:11 local time, an earthquake of magnitude 5.9, with a depth of 10 kilometers, was located 43 kilometers east of the province of Bocas del Toro. The seismic event was reported as being felt in: Bocas del Toro (Changuinola, Almirante, Chiriquí Grande, Isla Colón), Chiriquí (Tierras Altas, Boquete, Potrerillos, Bugaba, Gualaca, Almirante, Remedios), Veraguas (Santiago, Soná), Coclé (Aguadulce, Penonomé) and Colón (Donoso). According to SINAPROC, the verification of hospitals and other critical infrastructure in Bocas del Toro and Chiriquí continues. The Dr. Rafael Hernández Regional Hospital reports no incidents.
