Landfill Fires in Azuero Region Cause Concern

Open-air landfill fires have intensified during the current dry season, causing concern among authorities and residents of various communities in the Azuero region. The situation is particularly critical in districts such as Guararé and in the La Honda sector in Los Santos province, where multiple fires have been reported in recent weeks. Lieutenant Euclides Barrios, head of operations for the Panama Fire Corps, reported an increase in this type of emergency so far this year. He highlighted that they have had to intervene at least six times at the Guararé landfill alone, while a fire was recently reported in the La Honda sector, requiring an extensive control operation. Barrios explained that these situations demand complex operations involving coordination with municipalities responsible for the landfills, as well as support from private companies, water tankers, heavy equipment, and the Urban and Domestic Cleaning Authority. Among the techniques used is the application of large amounts of earth to extinguish flames, reduce spread, and minimize smoke emission, the main impact on nearby communities.

In the most recent case, operations at the La Honda landfill lasted for over 12 continuous hours, involving several units, water tankers, and municipal dump trucks. Although the fire was brought under control, the wear and tear on personnel and equipment was significant. Similarly, a fire broke out at the Chitré landfill, prompting the mobilization of heavy equipment to prevent its spread. Authorities reiterate that these fires, in addition to representing high operational costs, directly affect the health of residents due to smoke and toxic gas inhalation. They also do not rule out that some of these events may be intentional, maintaining the call for the public to avoid irresponsible practices and report any suspicious activity.
