Sinaproc Issues Alert for High UV Radiation

Panama's civil protection agency warns of high to extreme UV-B radiation from March 28-30, advising the public to avoid direct sun exposure.

Sinaproc Issues Alert for High UV Radiation

The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) has issued a prevention alert due to high levels of UV-B radiation. According to the entity, based on the surveillance notice issued by the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (IMHPA), high to extreme UV-B radiation indices are being maintained across most of the national territory. This alert is in effect from 9:00 a.m. on March 28, 2026, until 5:00 p.m. on March 30, 2026. During this period, clear to partly cloudy skies are forecast, which significantly increases the incidence of solar radiation. The areas under the alert include the Western, Central, Metropolitan, and Eastern regions, where risk levels are estimated to be between very high (8-10) and extreme (+11). The entity recommends that the population avoid direct sun exposure between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Use high-protection sunscreen, wear lightweight long-sleeved clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-protective glasses. It is also important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day and to remain in cool, ventilated, or shaded areas. Special attention should be paid to children, the elderly, and people with health conditions. It is stated that prolonged exposure to these radiation levels can have negative health effects, such as redness, irritation, and burns on the skin. Therefore, the population is urged to follow the issued recommendations and adopt preventive measures.
