According to the forecast from the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (IMHPA), rain with isolated thunderstorms is expected in the country during Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday due to the presence of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). In light of this situation, the Emergency Operations Center and its inter-institutional links are maintaining monitoring and surveillance in vulnerable areas of the provinces and district areas.
Among the recommendations issued are to stay away from coastal and riverside areas, disconnect and distance from electrical appliances, cut off the electricity supply in case of flood risk, and not to take refuge under electricity poles or wires. The population is urged to inform themselves about evacuation places and elevated sites, as well as to stay updated through official accounts for current information in case of emergencies.
Regarding the ongoing alerts, several provinces of the country have been affected. Some of them will move to yellow alert starting Monday, November 18, 2024, while others have been reclassified to green alert. According to IMHPA, weather conditions will return to normal starting Sunday, November 17, 2024, without the influence of external weather phenomena, but with the presence of the ITCZ generating rain with storms, focusing especially on the metropolitan region, eastern region, Colón, and Coclé during Monday.
The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) reports that, thanks to improvements in weather conditions and vigilance warnings from IMHPA, it has been decided to lower the red alert in some provinces such as Chiriquí, Veraguas, and the Ngobe Buglé comarca.
