Comptroller: 'Impunity Remains Rife'

The General Comptroller of the Republic, Anel Flores, warned: "This is bigger than people suspect." He emphasized that impunity continues to reign and that those who have improperly enriched themselves must face not only legal consequences but also public scrutiny. Flores cited examples of people who cannot justify their wealth, when just five years ago they couldn't afford a taxi. The Comptroller explained that the asset freezes against former officials of the past administration are based on the Organic Law of the General Comptroller's Office. He also questioned the complicity of certain business sectors, pointing out that entrepreneurs who rent properties to these individuals claim ignorance, thereby helping to launder capital, as these people cannot justify rents of $4,500 to $5,000 on their former salaries. Flores also revealed a strategy for hiding assets by transferring them to private foundations, usually in the name of spouses or close relatives. He called on the national banking sector to strengthen its control mechanisms.
