Incident with Deputy Mosquera at Police Checkpoint in Panama

Panamanian police pursued a pickup truck carrying Deputy Isaac Mosquera after he evaded a checkpoint. The RM bloc condemned the police action as disproportionate and demanded an investigation.

The National Police explained that a black pickup truck with no visible license plates, coming from the province of Darién, evaded a police checkpoint. In response, the units issued the appropriate alert and began a preventive pursuit. The agency detailed that at the entrance to San Juan de Pacora, a shot was fired into the air as a warning to stop the vehicle. After coordinating with the relevant authorities and reporting no further incidents, the citizen was allowed to continue on his way. In a statement, the parliamentary bloc stated that, according to information circulating on social networks, a police unit fired shots even though the deputy was properly identified. They added that after inspecting the vehicle, it was confirmed that there were no illicit objects, only gifts for the mothers of the circuit, which demonstrates the disproportion and unjustifiability of the described action. The RM bloc categorically condemns any act of violence, whoever it comes from, against any citizen, and even more so when it involves a deputy of the Republic, whose investiture and constitutional guarantees must be respected at all times in the Republic of Panama. "We demand that the facts be investigated immediately, thoroughly, and impartially, that responsibilities be determined in accordance with the law, and that corrective measures be adopted to prevent similar situations from happening again," the statement reads. During a visual inspection, it was observed that the vehicle had several packages in the back and initially did not lower its windows; however, after following instructions, the driver lowered them and identified himself as the driver of a vehicle owned by Deputy Isaac Mosquera from the province of Darién, after which the honorable deputy lowered the vehicle's window and identified himself. The vehicle traveled 3.5 kilometers after evading the checkpoint, where it stopped and was approached by the agents.
