Political Shakeup in Panama's Attorney General's Office

The Realizando Metas collective criticized the appointment of AnilĂș Batista as General Secretary of Panama's Attorney General's Office, citing her past legal violations. Internal conflicts within the agency led to the removal of other high-ranking officials.

The collective Realizando Metas spoke out this week regarding movements within the Public Ministry that include the transfer of former prosecutor AnilĂș Batista to the position of General Secretary of the Attorney General's Office (PGN). The collective states that 'in her time as a prosecutor, she would have incurred violations of the law and due process'. Jorge Luis de la Torre, who held the position until mid-week, was demoted to the Office of Implementation and Monitoring of the Accusatory Criminal System. In this regard, the collective requested the reconsideration and/or removal of Batista from such an important position, as there are better prosecutors who can occupy it. The party goes further and draws a parallel with Machiavelli's theory, which says 'everything must change so that nothing changes' regarding the selection of the new general secretary of the Attorney General's Office. 'We are informed that there are other more sensitive associations of hers that will come out if necessary,' the party warned. Sources close to the institution reported that the movement came after internal tensions within the body. Former President Ricardo Martinelli also echoed this debate, asking: 'Is this possible?'
