Panama Rejects Deputies' Trip to Taiwan

The Panamanian government stated that the trip of a group of deputies to Taiwan is their personal initiative and does not reflect the country's official position, which adheres to the 'One China' policy.

Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino stated that he finds no practical sense in the upcoming trip of a group of deputies to Taiwan. He mentioned that nothing discussed by the parliamentarians with Taiwanese officials is binding or creates any commitments for Panama, which broke diplomatic ties with the island in 2017 to establish them with Beijing. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that the Executive Branch has no connection to the trip announced by a minority group of National Assembly deputies. In this regard, the Government of the Republic of Panama reiterates its commitment to the 'One China' policy, in accordance with national interests and established diplomatic commitments. The Executive Branch once again downplayed the diplomatic significance of the trip that some Panamanian deputies will make to Taiwan, as it did last year, according to the Ministry of Foreign Relations. In fact, it stated that Panama will continue to strengthen its friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect with the People's Republic of China, within the framework of mutual recognition and respect for national sovereignty. In November 2025, a group of deputies traveled to Taiwan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled that the conduct of foreign policy is a constitutional and exclusive attribute of the Executive Branch. 'This visit responds exclusively to personal decisions and individual initiatives of those deputies and, therefore, does not represent the official position of the Panamanian State or its foreign policy,' it expressed.
