Odebrecht Trial in Panama Postponed Amid Delays

The Odebrecht trial in Panama faces new delays. The judge postponed hearings due to videoconferencing issues for a witness. The final stage with arguments has begun.

The postponement adds to other delays recorded during the trial development, linked to witness availability and the rescheduling of hearings. The Odebrecht case trial hearing continued this Tuesday with its thirteenth session, marked by recesses and adjustments to the judicial schedule, at the Court for Liquidating Criminal Cases. The hearing was interrupted by two recesses decreed by Judge Baloisa Marquínez, one of them due to the impossibility of receiving the virtual testimony of Juan Cejudo Peña from the Panama Embassy in Madrid. Each defense attorney will have one hour to present their arguments before the court, in accordance with the established schedule. During the session, the defense presented part of their evidence and testified Juan Jesús Cedeño, summoned to address issues related to public contracts within the process. Hearings will be held from this Wednesday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. With the start of final arguments, the trial enters a key phase, while some announced appearances within the process remain pending. It was reported in the courtroom that the absence of judicial personnel authorized to verify the witness's identity prevented their appearance, so their testimony was rescheduled for today. Judge Marquínez announced that this Wednesday she will begin the final arguments stage, starting with the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, led by Prosecutor Ruth Morcillo.
