The Panamanian Association of Business Executives (APEDE) called on the National Assembly to carry out the selection process for the new Human Rights Ombudsman responsibly, transparently, and with a national vision. This key appointment is crucial for institutional strengthening. The association emphasized that the election must prioritize the suitability, independence, and long-term vision of the candidate, elements it considers fundamental to ensuring a management aligned with the protection of human rights and the strengthening of the rule of law. APEDE stressed that the institution plays an essential role as a check against potential abuses of power. In this regard, the organization insisted that the selected person must have proven training and experience in human rights, in addition to an unblemished record and a commitment to transparency and accountability. It also highlighted the need for the position to be exercised independently from the state's bodies and any particular interests. “The Office of the Ombudsman must be an institution close to the citizenry, with credibility and the capacity to act. Its strength is key to protecting rights, but also to generating confidence in the functioning of the State. Panama needs institutions that respond to the country, not to particular interests,” highlighted the president of APEDE, Giulia De Sanctis. APEDE warned that a strengthened Ombudsman's Office contributes to improving institutional quality, strengthening democracy, and generating public trust, while its weakening could widen existing gaps and affect the State's ability to respond to the most vulnerable sectors. Finally, the association reiterated that this process represents an opportunity to reinforce the country's democratic pillars, which is why it asked for the election of the new Ombudsman to be carried out with a long-term vision and a real commitment to Panama.
