The Future of Suntracs at Stake in Panamanian Court

The future of Suntracs began to take shape this Friday when a hearing started in a sectional labor court that could lead to the dissolution of one of the country's most powerful unions. During the day, the Ministry of Labor and Development of Labor (Mitradel) supported its demand, pointing out alleged irregularities that, in its opinion, constitute sufficient grounds to order the dissolution of the union. Among the arguments presented are alleged acts of deviation from the union's purposes, improper use of resources, as well as behaviors that, according to the plaintiff, have affected the development of works and public order. The legal representation of Suntracs rejected the allegations and made it clear that it will fight in the courts, alleging that the process has political motivations and that the accusations lack probative evidence. According to the defense, the hearing will be the stage to dismantle each of the arguments presented by Mitradel. The path to this hearing was not smooth. The process faced delays due to disputes over the legal representation of the union and the validity of its directive, aspects that had to be resolved before getting to the heart of the case. With these obstacles overcome, the file now enters a critical stage: the presentation of evidence and judicial evaluation.
