Proposal for Law on Defamation Dies in Commission

A proposed law that aimed to increase the penalty for defamation and slander in Panama did not advance in the Government Commission and received support only from the ruling party deputy Luis Eduardo Camacho.

The bill, which intended to toughen sanctions for defamation and slander in the country, did not obtain the necessary support to be discussed in the National Assembly. Despite the importance of legislating on this issue, the proposal failed to pass the filter of the Government Commission.

According to deputy Luis Eduardo Camacho, the initiative aimed to protect the honor and reputation of individuals in Panama. However, lacking sufficient support, the project became stalled and will not be debated in the legislative plenary.

In light of this situation, the proposed law seeking to increase penalties for defamation and slander in the country has died in its initial stage, failing to pass the review of the Government and Justice Commission of the National Assembly.
