The Minister of Government, Dinoska Montalvo, revealed that six thousand inmates in Panama have completed their sentences but remain in prison. This information was shared during the presentation of the Government Ministry's budget.
According to Montalvo, this situation is due to various reasons, such as the lack of financial resources to pay fines or repair damages, as well as the lack of attention from defense attorneys to complete the necessary procedures for the release of the inmates.
The minister emphasized the importance of urgently addressing this problem to ensure that individuals deprived of liberty receive the necessary support for their reintegration into society. In this regard, different measures are being evaluated to expedite the release processes for those inmates who have already completed their sentences. In addition, there is a focus on implementing legal and social assistance programs for those lacking the necessary resources to complete the release requirements.
In the words of Minister Montalvo: "It is essential that we work together to resolve this situation and ensure that those who have completed their sentences can reintegrate into society effectively and contribute positively to it."
