A heated brawl recorded last Saturday during the match between the teams of Los Santos and Veraguas, at the Roberto “Flaco Bala” Hernández Stadium, continues to generate strong repercussions in the country's judicial and sporting sphere, after the imputation of charges for attempted homicide against the alleged aggressor. This Monday, the hearing was held where the apprehension of Juan José Aizprua Rodríguez was legalized, accused of his participation in the violent events that left the young Yeison Austin Thompson Díaz seriously injured. The victim's private lawyer, Rodney Saavedra, confirmed that charges of attempted homicide were filed against the accused, in addition, the court ordered the most severe precautionary measure: provisional detention for a period of six months, while investigations advance. Saavedra also highlighted that there are sufficient elements within the medical report that support the severity of the case, as the document details that the player received a direct hit with a bat, a forceful blow that put his life in danger. This finding was decisive for the process to take a turn, moving from an initial complaint for personal injuries to the current imputation for attempted homicide. However, the defense of the accused, represented by lawyer Mario Luis Delgado, reacted immediately showing his disagreement with the judicial decision, and assured that during the process irregularities were committed that violate due process. The jurist also questioned the evaluation of the evidence, alleging that the blow inflicted by his client was not aimed at the victim's head, but at the hand of another player, which —in his opinion— changes the context of the events. Another critical point pointed out by the defense was that the judge would have previously stated having seen a video of the incident, which, according to Delgado, suggests an anticipated criterion that could have influenced the decision to impose detention. In this scenario, the defense filed an appeal that will be argued this Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. before the Court of Appeals, where they hope for a “more impartial” review of the case. The violent scene, which even forced the suspension of the sporting event, has ignited the debate about security in stadiums and behavior on the playing field, leaving a stain on one of the country's most followed sporting events.
