The Democratic Republic of Congo national team secured the last available spot for the World Cup on Tuesday by defeating Jamaica 1-0 in extra time during the intercontinental playoff final, held at the Akron Stadium in the Mexican city of Zapopan. The African team's goal came in the 100th minute through Burnley defender Axel Tuanzebe, following a regulation time scoreless draw. Consequently, the Congolese team will be placed in Group K, where they will face Portugal, Uzbekistan, and Colombia. The Democratic Republic of Congo's only previous World Cup appearance was in 1974 in Germany, when the country was officially known as Zaire. Earlier, the national teams of Sweden, Czech Republic, Turkey, and Bosnia and Herzegovina qualified for the North American tournament by eliminating Poland, Denmark, Kosovo, and Italy, respectively. The final spot will be decided in a match between Bolivia and Iraq, to be played at the BBVA Stadium in Monterrey, Mexico. Axel Tuanzabe broke the deadlock!
