In the late hours of December 27, the Municipality of Arraiján, without prior notice or communication with the Chinese associations of Panama, and ignoring the firm opposition of Chinese-Panamanian representatives present at the site, forcibly and arbitrarily demolished the China-Panama Park and the Monument to the 150th Anniversary of the Arrival of the Chinese to Panama, located at the Mirador del Puente de las Américas. These sites commemorate the centennial contribution of the Chinese to the isthmian country and symbolize the friendship between the Chinese and Panamanian peoples.
This act not only brutally tramples on the collective feelings of the 300,000 Chinese-Panamanians in the country, but also severely injures the great affection and care that the Chinese have for the Panamanian people.
The Embassy of China in Panama also directly expressed to the Municipality its willingness to provide support for the said renovation, but this proposal was also ignored.
The unjustified and brutal demolition of the Park and the Monument has aroused great concern from the Central Government of Panama and has caused strong indignation among various social sectors, especially in Chinese associations.
We fully consult with the Chinese associations and restore the China-Panama Park and the Monument to the Chinese in its original location. At the same time, we call on the Chinese community in Panama to rationally defend their legitimate rights and interests in accordance with the laws and customs of Panama, as they have always done.
