Classes at the Harmodio Arias Madrid school, located in Chame, were suspended this Monday after the educational institution was the target of a series of vandalism and theft acts over the weekend. It was reported that the criminals damaged the electrical supply, stole materials and equipment, including computers, and took part of the food from the school cafeteria. Pérez called on parents to join in the care and protection of the school, which should be considered a sacred site. He also indicated that classes at the Harmodio Arias school will remain suspended for at least a week until the internal electrical network is repaired. This is the third time that the electrical system of this school has been the target of theft by unknown individuals who take advantage of the scant surveillance at the school. The copying center and several classrooms were also ransacked by thieves, leaving everything disordered and with some damage. The educational community expresses its concern, as this is not the first time this type of incident has occurred. In addition to the theft of equipment, the perpetrators left one of the school's pavilions without power by vandalizing the electrical system, so the school management ordered the suspension of classes. On that date, Vielka Martínez, the school's director, indicated that the stolen equipment was essential for the development of academic activities. Last October 16, a television, a projector, and 11 internal communication radios were stolen by unknown individuals who broke into the Dr. Harmodio Arias Madrid school, located in the district of Chame, province of West Panama. The educational community had previously requested the Ministry of Education to appoint security guards to reinforce the security of the school. According to the official, a second custodian has already been appointed at this school center where 2,000 students study. They also forced locks and entered the offices of the day and night sections in search of money and valuables. Adriano Pérez, regional director of the Ministry of Education in West Panama, indicated that the economic losses generated by the damage to the electrical system have not yet been accurately calculated. The school authorities filed the corresponding complaint and hope that agents from the Judicial Investigation Directorate (DIJ) will gather information and evidence to find those responsible for these vandal acts.
