Last Friday, January 23rd, the Panama Aquatic Resources Authority (ARAP), along with the National Aeronaval Service (SENAN), removed a drifting gillnet from the sea in the Gulf of Chiriquí, following an anonymous tip. The net was taken into immediate custody while its origin is determined. The measure is based on Administrative Resolution No. 086 of August 12, 2011, which states in its Second Article that all fishing vessels must keep their fishing gear attached to the vessel while at sea. Furthermore, the Third Article indicates that any drifting fishing gear will be seized by the authorities. ARAP emphasized that it maintains an open-door policy with both industrial and artisanal fishermen and seeks a healthy coexistence in the country's fishing activities. The institution reiterated that its priority is to comply with sustainability standards, protecting marine resources and fishing communities.
