The president of the Republic of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, recently discussed the situation of the mine in Coclesito and expressed his commitment to addressing the challenges facing the region following the closure of mining operations. During a meeting with service providers from the mine, the economic difficulties that have arisen from this situation were addressed.
In his statements, Mulino highlighted the sadness and difficult reality that some providers face, who have had to close their businesses due to the crisis generated by the mine's closure. "Six representatives from different activities that provided goods and services to the mine came. I don't want to elaborate further, but the country can be assured that we are working on it," the president stated.
Mulino also mentioned that he has new ideas for addressing the future of the mine and committed to visiting Coclesito to provide support to the affected community. He emphasized the economic importance of the mine, which represented 5% of the country's Gross Domestic Product, and expressed his concern about the negative impact its closure has had on the region.
The president emphasized that any future negotiation with the mining company will be conditioned on the suspension of the ongoing international arbitrations. Mulino stressed the need to find solutions for the economic crisis that has hit the region and committed to working on it once the crisis of the Social Security Fund is resolved.
In summary, Mulino reiterated his commitment to addressing the crisis in Coclesito and seeking solutions for the difficult economic situation facing the region following the mine's closure.
