Heavy Rains Cause Flooding and Traffic Disruptions in Colón Province

Heavy rainfall in Colón province has caused city and community flooding, school closures, and event cancellations. Authorities urge residents to exercise caution.

Heavy rains began in the province of Colón from early Thursday morning, threatening continued flooding and traffic disruptions for both entering and exiting the city of Colón. In the city of Colón, several avenues were flooded, including Avenida Bolívar, Amador Guerrero, and Meléndez. The rains have caused serious flooding in several communities of the Cativá district. It has been clarified that the suspension of classes only applies to schools directly affected by the rains. Other educational centers in the province will continue their activities normally. The Regional Directorate of Education of Colón announced the temporary suspension of classes in the areas of the province and communities affected by the floods caused by the intense rains. The bad weather has extended to the Costa Abajo de Colón and the Transístmica area, where trees have fallen as a result of heavy rainfall, such as the case of a tree that fell on the power lines in Sardinilla, leaving residents without service. This caused public discontent, as people had to wait up to 3 hours to board a bus and return home. The measure is due to the difficulty of accessing educational centers due to the weather conditions and aims to guarantee the safety of students, teachers, and administrative staff. Meanwhile, the National System of Civil Protection suspended the children's rights parade in Colón due to the bad weather. The Ministry of Education (Meduca) is considering rescheduling it for another date. The Ministry of Education maintains constant communication with the National System of Civil Protection (Sinaproc) to evaluate the evolution of the weather conditions and ensure the well-being of the educational community. This is because taxis, unable to go to the outskirts, were not picking up passengers to avoid facing traffic jams and flooded streets.
