Migrant Shipwreck in Colón

On Saturday, a ship carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Santa Isabel district, in the Costa Arriba area of Colón, leaving one dead and at least 15 injured. The vessel departed from Palenque towards Colombia and was carrying 35 people, of whom 33 were Venezuelan migrants and two were crew members. Heavy waves and the ship's inability to accommodate so many passengers contributed to the accident.

Rescue teams included personnel from the National Aeronaval Service, 911 ambulances and private vehicles that transported migrants to the Health Center of Nombre de Dios.

One migrant drowned and several were injured by contact with fuel. Prosecutorial staff are expected to investigate the incident.
