Commemoration of Martyrs in Colón: Civic and Religious Honors

On January 9th, Colón, Panama, hosted civic and religious ceremonies honoring martyrs who died defending the nation against US troops. The event included a mass at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and a procession to a mausoleum, led by survivors who shared their stories of patriotism and sacrifice.


Various civic and religious acts were held on January 9th to commemorate the heroic deeds of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives defending the homeland against American troops in the city of Colón. After January 9th, demonstrations continued in the city of Colón, with clashes with American troops. Pilgrimages to the martyrs were held at this site. Luis Carlos Carrasquilla, one of the survivors, stated that as a student, he went to fight for the homeland upon seeing the abuse being committed at that time. Once the religious service concluded, delegations composed of survivors of this patriotic feat walked along Central Avenue until reaching the mausoleum, located on the premises of the synthetic field on the outskirts of the Atlantic city. The commemoration began with a mass at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral on 5th and 6th Streets, Amador Guerrero Avenue, where prayers were said for the souls of the martyrs and a reminder was made not to forget them, to be an example for new generations.
