Colón Province Begins "Tempe de Soto" Celebration

The province of Colón will be the stage this Tuesday, January 20, starting at 2:00 PM, for the beginning of the celebration of the "Tempe de Soto," an ancestral manifestation of the Congo culture. The event will include the deployment of the Congo flag on the building of the Governorate of Colón. This activity is promoted by the GURUBATA Foundation, as part of its efforts to rescue, preserve, and make visible the Afro-Colonese cultural expressions that are part of the historical and spiritual heritage of the Congo people. The "Tempe de Soto" represents a symbolic act of resistance, memory, and affirmation of identity, inherited from African ancestors and passed down from generation to generation in the communities of the Caribbean coast of Colón. This celebration marks the beginning of the Congo season, a period that starts on January 20 and culminates with Ash Wednesday. During this time, the Colón communities are filled with music, dance, rituals, and representations that celebrate the struggle for freedom and the rich cultural heritage of ancestors from Africa. The deployment of the Congo flag reaffirms the pride, struggle, and freedom that characterize this tradition, recognized nationally and internationally. These palenques are set up in various communities on the coasts of Colón, with the aim of transferring knowledge of this culture to new generations.
