Colón's Community Mobilization Against Government Policies

In Colón, residents are opposing new government policies that threaten local development. With the 173rd anniversary of the city's foundation, a call for unity emerges against privatization and foreign influence.

Colón's Community Mobilization Against Government Policies

Within the framework of the search for the development of Colón with community, municipal, and administrative participation, there are plans that lack official provincial support as they do not meet government mercantile standards.

Throughout 173 years since the foundation of the city of Colón, its inhabitants have been known for their resistance to the injustice and corruption of the oligarchic and bourgeois sectors that have governed the region. Since the colonial era, Colón has been linked to a transit model that now places it at a crossroads between the lack of an effective government program and the loss of rights.

It is evident that local authorities lack a clear project for the development of the region, a situation exacerbated by the subordination of the Panamanian government to the demands of Washington regarding the Panama Canal and security in Darién. In the face of this, the popular movement has three key tasks ahead.

First, to confront the economic interests that support the privatization of social security and mining exploitation, among others. In 2023, the Comprehensive Development Plan for Colón, developed with social and business participation, was approved. It is essential to open a broad debate to publicize this plan.

It is necessary to mobilize in defense of sovereignty and against the privatization of social security, mining, and the construction of dams. Colón celebrated 173 years since its foundation as a city that has served the interests of the bourgeoisie linked to the tertiary sector of the economy.

The transit model imposed by the construction of the railway and later the Panama Canal has not benefited the population, especially the most vulnerable. In this context, it is vital to oppose the proposed reforms to social security and external interferences that threaten the sovereignty of the country.
