Colón Authorities Call for Clean Streets to Prevent Flooding

Authorities in the Panamanian city of Colón are concerned about the state of the stormwater system, from which over 15 tons of waste were extracted. Officials warn that this leads to flooding during rains and call on citizens to be responsible with waste.

In response to this, the authorities in Colón have called on the public to avoid dumping waste in the streets and canals, as this practice aggravates the vulnerability of the stormwater system and increases the risk of emergencies. On repeated occasions, officials from the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) have warned that dumping waste into the streets that ends up in the sewers puts the operation of drainage pumps at risk, which are vital for preventing floods during periods of heavy rain. Likewise, Nancy López, 33, requested that authorities impose fines on those who insist on throwing trash disorderly. A large amount of waste was extracted from the stormwater system located on 16th Street at the entrance to the city of Colón, causing concern among the authorities. For Ricardo Becker, 46, the community must contribute by not throwing trash onto the streets without any control, otherwise the floods will continue. During the cleaning of the system, more than 15 tons of garbage were collected, in which all kinds of waste were found.
