Despite the constant cleaning efforts carried out by the Ministry of Public Works (MOP), the pumping station located on Paseo Washington in the city of Colón, woke up completely full of trash again. This recurring situation highlights the negative impact of inadequate waste disposal in the community. Just this past December 2nd, MOP crews removed several tons of waste at this same rainwater station. On that occasion, Elvin Ábrego, provincial director of the MOP, warned that the accumulation of waste compromises the operation of the pumps, which are essential for managing wastewater and rainwater in this flood-prone area. Despite this, the bad practice of people throwing trash in the streets continues to cause serious problems, as this waste ends up trapped in the automatic screening grate of the pumping station. Among the extracted waste were plastic bottles, wood, and various objects that not only affect the infrastructure but also pose a risk to the safety and well-being of residents. A vactor truck was used again to remove a large amount of waste, but the MOP emphasizes that these efforts will not be effective without the active collaboration of the citizens.
