Colón Pumping Station Again Filled with Trash

The pumping station on Paseo Washington in Colón is once again full of trash. The Ministry of Public Works states that without public cooperation, the problem will persist, as waste clogs equipment and poses a flooding risk.

Despite the constant cleanup efforts by the Ministry of Public Works (MOP), the pumping station located on Paseo Washington in the city of Colón, once again woke up completely full of trash. A vactor truck was used again to remove a large amount of waste, but the MOP emphasizes that these efforts will not be effective without the active collaboration of the public. Just this past December 2nd, MOP crews removed several tons of waste at this very same pumping station. On that occasion, Elvin Ábrego, provincial director of the MOP, warned that the accumulation of waste compromises the operation of the pumps, which are essential for managing wastewater and stormwater in this flood-prone area. Despite this, the bad practice of citizens throwing trash in the streets continues to cause serious problems, as this waste ends up trapped in the automatic screening grate of the pumping station. Among the waste extracted were plastic bottles, woods, and various objects that not only affect the infrastructure but also put the safety and well-being of residents at risk. This recurring situation highlights the negative impact of poor waste disposal on the community.
