AMP Reactivates Ferry Service to Taboga Island

The Maritime Authority of Panama (AMP) announced that starting tomorrow, trips by two tourist transport companies to Taboga Island, in the city of Panama, will be reactivated.

This decision was made after a series of meetings aimed at guaranteeing a safe, orderly, and compliant service with current regulations. The institution reminded that, in accordance with Law No. 56 of 2008, its responsibility is to ensure maritime safety, human life at sea, and the free transit of vessels in national jurisdictional waters.

The Vice Minister of the Presidency, Birna Luque; the Deputy Director of the Tourism Authority, Jorge Correa; the mayor of Taboga, Ramón Ramos; the president of the Municipal Council, Raúl Varela; as well as community, merchant, and tourism operator representatives attended a meeting where the Deputy Administrator, Alexander De Gracia, acted as a mediator.

The central objective was to reach an agreement that provides legal certainty, fosters free competition, and protects user rights. De Gracia detailed that five vessels will be added to the transportation service for Taboga residents. One is already operational, two will start functioning next week, and the other two are advancing in their procedures to join the market.

AMP highlighted that these options will offer affordable rates and adequate comfort conditions. It also recognized the citizen's right to peaceful protest, although it clarified that the rates of private companies respond to the law of supply and demand, so they are not under the institution's jurisdiction.

The current AMP administration announced that it is projecting a new bidding process for the construction of a dock in Taboga, while in parallel, repair work is being carried out on the dock of Isla Perico, recently recovered after being in private hands for years. This infrastructure will serve as a boarding point for island residents.

AMP reaffirmed its commitment to working together with communities and authorities to strengthen maritime connectivity and ensure a reliable service for the population.
