Obarrio Electrical Undergrounding Project Reaches Civil Works Milestone

The National Authority of Public Services (ASEP) confirmed that the civil infrastructure phase of the electrical undergrounding project in the Obarrio area of Panama is 100% complete. The project aims to modernize the power system in a key commercial and financial center of the capital. It involves the installation of hundreds of new LED lights, transformers, and remotely controlled switches, with plans to extend the underground network to enhance reliability and resilience against climate threats.

Obarrio Electrical Undergrounding Project Reaches Civil Works Milestone

The National Authority of Public Services (ASEP) inspected the works in the Obarrio sector, where the civil infrastructure phase already records a 100% progress. With these actions, the regulatory entity reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development and the technical supervision of public services. This project is part of a structural strategy to modernize the energy infrastructure of Panama City and improve the reliability of the system in one of its most important commercial and financial zones. Technical advances and specifications The project intervenes in the polygon located between street 54 and the intersection with Brazil Avenue. (26/Feb/2026 – web – Panama24Horas.com.pa) Panama City, Panama.- The general administrator of the National Authority of Public Services (ASEP), Zelmar Rodríguez Crespo, carried out a supervisory visit to the electrical undergrounding project being developed in the Obarrio sector. According to the official report, the civil works phase, which includes the construction of ducts, chambers, and underground manholes, has reached 100% execution. In addition, the system will be strengthened with the installation of: 180 LED-type luminaires for greater luminous efficiency. 55 distribution transformers. Four remotely controlled switches for remote and safe operation. Deadlines and long-term vision Although the contractual date for completion of the works is December 2026, the technical complexity of the comprehensive migration could extend the final delivery until the first half of 2027. This future phase is in the bidding process and has an estimated execution horizon between 2026 and 2030, which ensures the continuity of energy planning in the capital. Rodríguez Crespo emphasized that this effort reduces the network's vulnerability to climate events and raises the standards of Panamanian urban infrastructure. Complementarily, ASEP reported that it is preparing a new undergrounding stage that will extend from Soho Mall to the Cincuentenario Avenue. This progress allows the definitive migration of the aerial system to underground to begin through the installation of medium and low voltage cables. The projected network contemplates the placement of more than 98 thousand meters of electrical wiring.
