Panama Announces Measures to Combat Rising Fuel Prices

The Minister of Economy and Finance of Panama, Felipe Chapman, announced a series of measures on Tuesday, March 24, in response to the rising fuel prices, which are impacting various sectors of the country's economy. He indicated that among the actions is the strict reduction in the use of government vehicles. The subsidy for the kitchen gas tank will also be maintained. The government is also working on solutions to contain the increase in agricultural inputs. For now, a high-level commission has been created to assess the situation daily. Additionally, a staggered schedule for public officials and sending workers on vacation, if they have accumulated days, is being considered. On the part of the private sector, telework is being evaluated. Chapman noted that due to constant fluctuations in crude oil prices due to the war in the Middle East, other measures to be taken will be announced soon. He also announced that they will hold talks with the transport sector —selective and collective— on Wednesday to analyze the situation. For now, Metro Bus and Metro de Panamfa fares remain unchanged.
