Widespread Non-Compliance in Air Conditioner Labeling in Panama

The Authority for Consumer Protection and Competition Defense (Acodeco) announced that it detected widespread non-compliance in the energy efficiency labeling of air conditioners following inspections conducted in stores in Panama City. According to preliminary results from the Metrology Department, 22 commercial establishments were visited, where 15 brands and a total of 208 air conditioner models were reviewed. Of these, only three met the labeling standards, while 205 had irregularities. The verifications focused on confirming that the units displayed the energy efficiency label in a visible and accessible manner, as required by current technical regulations and national legislation. This information allows consumers to know the level of electricity consumption before making a purchase. According to Acodeco, these standards aim to ensure the rational and efficient use of energy, as well as to provide clear tools for comparing products and choosing those that generate a lower impact on the electricity bill. The entity reiterated that it will continue with these verifications nationwide so that businesses comply with the regulations and consumers have access to truthful information when purchasing this equipment.
