Explosion in Panama Skyscraper Causes Burns and Evacuation

An explosion, likely caused by a gas leak, occurred at the Torres de Montserrat complex in Panama. A man was burned with second-degree burns, and over 100 people and 25 pets were evacuated. Firefighters are continuing operations at the scene.

A man suffered second-degree burns following an explosion on the 21st floor of the Torres de Montserrat building, located near the Colegio Comercial Panamá and 12 de Octubre Avenue in the Pueblo Nuevo district. This was confirmed by Lieutenant Caled Rodríguez, Deputy Director of the Operations Department for Assistance, Search, and Rescue of the Honorable Fire Department.

The explosion caused panic among residents of the housing complex, who immediately notified the Fire Department of what happened in apartment D.

Units from the Ricardo Arango station arrived at the scene with operational vehicles, including a vehicle 300, a rapid intervention truck, and a heavy rescue truck.

Residents of the building revealed that the gas supply service had been suspended throughout the building about a month ago and was scheduled to resume this Wednesday. Therefore, it is presumed that the incident is related to a gas leak.

As a precaution, more than 100 people and approximately 25 pets, including cats and dogs, were evacuated from the building of over 25 floors. They were taken to a meeting point at a safe distance.

Units from the BCBRP continue with structural verification, risk control, and inspection for possible gas leaks to ensure safety in the area.

The man with burns received immediate attention from paramedics of the BCBRP's prehospital medical care services.
