Panama Residents Create Patriotic Murals

A large-scale social initiative to create murals dedicated to national history and heroes has unfolded in Panama. Led by artist Ologuagdi, the project involves local residents and revives patriotic values in the public spaces of the capital.

In Panama, impactful murals have been created to commemorate historical events, such as the January 1964 student uprising, the defense of national sovereignty, and the rescue of collective memory. Residents of popular neighborhoods are invited to participate in the mural project, using brushes to trace lines or fill in the color of images of martyrs previously outlined on the walls and buildings of the city. Among these figures, indigenous and Afro-descendant heroes stand out, reinforcing Panamanian identity. The community residents paint the murals. The eye-catching murals, inspired by Ologuagdi, are filled with patriotic scenes. They are particularly prominent in the districts of Santa Ana, Río Abajo, and Calidonia, where decisive and important struggles of the studious youth and the working class have taken place over recent decades. For the veteran artist, it is essential that young Panamanians value their own history, told through the murals. The muralist art, inspired by the national identity and the struggle traditions of the Panamanian people, is once again vibrant in the streets of Panama City, as a result of a collective, inclusive, and persistent pictorial work. This was recognized by Bayano digital in an interview with Ologuagdi, a Panamanian painter, designer, and muralist of Guna origin, who promotes this social initiative that bets on the rescue of public spaces and the strengthening of patriotic values forgotten by the selfish and elitist management of power.
