Panama Inaugurates New Coastal Space 'La Playita – Las Garzas'

The Municipality of Panama has opened a new coastal public space, 'La Playita – Las Garzas,' returning public access to the sea in the city's historic center. This project is part of a tourism activation and cultural life enhancement program, creating new opportunities for recreation and tourism.

The Municipality of Panama, together with the Office of the First Lady, the Ministry of Culture, the Panama Tourism Authority, and private sector allies, inaugurated La Playita – Las Garzas, a new coastal public space that marks the return of Panamanians to the seaside of the Casco Antiguo after decades without access.

With La Playita – Las Garzas, Panama once again looks towards its coast with an orderly, regulated, and safe space, returning to the citizens a sector that had been inaccessible for decades and integrating it into the Casco Peatonal program, which continues to generate new experiences and tourist activation in the historic center.

The opening of this space not only represents a historical recovery of the coastline but also opens up a new tourism opportunity for the city, integrating an urban attraction that strengthens the cultural life of the Casco Antiguo and expands the experience for visitors, residents, and tourists.

«We are recovering spaces for people to enjoy their city».

This process ensured that the recovery of the space was carried out respecting the existing infrastructure and complying with the protection standards of the Casco Antiguo.

All provisions for cleaning, waste management, and public safety are already active, with the presence of municipal surveillance and continuous maintenance protocols.

For its development, all technical teams complied with the necessary procedures to preserve the historic walls and guarantee the stability of the coastline, in coordination with heritage specialists and the Panama Sanitation Program.

Inaugurating this new space, Mayor Mayer Mizrachi highlighted that «This is a tourist attraction that puts the Casco Antiguo in another league: more vibrant, more accessible, and with new experiences for Panamanians and visitors».

Furthermore, the use of La Playita has been formally regulated, defining schedules, coexistence rules, and environmental guidelines to ensure a safe and sustainable experience.

Access will only be permitted during the day —from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.— and will be limited to passive activities such as sitting on the sand, taking photographs, contemplating the sunrise or sunset, and enjoying the coastal environment.

As part of the established measures, the consumption of alcohol, the use of horns, water activities, camping, uncontrolled pets, and leaving trash or using single-use plastics are not allowed.
