The Panamanian golden frog, an endangered species, has been chosen as the mascot for the IV South American Youth Games, to be held in Panama in 2026. The games will bring together more than 2,000 athletes aged 14 to 19 from the 15 member countries of the South American Sports Organization (ODESUR).
The mascot, named Antón, symbolizes the country's natural wealth and the values of youth sports, such as effort, discipline, and excellence. The choice of the golden frog is due to its cultural and environmental significance; for indigenous peoples, it is a symbol of good fortune and protection.
Organizers noted that the mascot will be linked to the sustainability programs accompanying the Panama 2026 Games, focused on promoting environmental care and leaving a legacy in environmental and sports in the region. During the Games, its image will accompany the competitions and official events, becoming a symbol of unity for the participating countries.
The Panamanian golden frog, known for its vibrant yellow and black color, is endemic to the central region of the country, especially the El Valle de Antón area and its surroundings. This species, a symbol of Panamanian environmental and culture, was last seen in the wild in 2009.
"Its population has drastically decreased due to chytridiomycosis, a disease caused by a fungus that is infectious and fatal to amphibians worldwide, as well as the degradation of its habitat by human activities and its capture for the pet trade."
