Tocumen Airport Prepares for Passenger Surge for Carnival

Tocumen International Airport in Panama expects an unprecedented flow of over 154,000 local passengers on international flights from February 13th to 22nd. The airport has activated a special plan to ensure efficient operations during the Carnival festivities.

The Tocumen International Airport during the Carnival festivities expects an extraordinary mobilization of over 154,000 local passengers between international arrivals and departures, from Friday, February 13th, to Sunday, February 22nd. The general manager of Tocumen International Airport, José Ruiz Blanco, highlighted that this special operation responds to the relevance of Carnival for the country's tourism and economic dynamics. Starting this Friday, February 13th, and until Sunday, February 15th, it is estimated that 84,061 people will enter the country through Tocumen International Airport to enjoy the Carnival festivities. “At Tocumen, we have reinforced our operational planning to attend to this increase in passengers, guaranteeing a fast, safe, orderly, and efficient transit, so that travelers begin or conclude their celebrations with a positive experience from the country's main airport,” stated Ruiz Blanco. Regarding international departures, the mobilization of 69,959 local passengers is projected during the same period. Friday, February 13th, will mark the peak of departures, with 9,810 travelers leaving the country through Tocumen, while on Saturday, the 14th, a high demand will be maintained, with more than 9,100 passengers taking off to different destinations. Among the most demanded international markets by Panamanians during this period, Miami, Bogotá, Orlando, Medellín, and San José stand out, reflecting the wide connectivity that Tocumen offers and its strategic role as an air bridge between North America, South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and Europe. “The Carnival festivities represent one of the periods of greatest tourist movement in Panama. The official Panamanian carnivals will be held from February 14th to 17th, 2026, and constitute one of the most emblematic festivities on the national calendar. During these days, cities and towns transform into scenarios of music, dance, and color, with parades, comparsas, and floats that precede the start of Lent. However, the day with the highest volume of arrivals will be Wednesday, February 18th, when the arrival of 10,920 travelers returning to Panama City is projected. Regions such as Las Tablas, known for its traditional rivalry between Calle Arriba and Calle Abajo, and Penonomé, distinguished for its comparsas and typical music, evidence the richness of this celebration's culture. To face the increase in passenger flow, the airport, in coordination with airlines and entities that make up the airport system, activated a comprehensive plan that includes the optimization of operational processes, the reinforcement of personnel in strategic areas such as migration, customs, and security, as well as permanent communication among all involved actors to ensure service efficiency. The airport reminds users of the importance of validating travel documentation in advance and abstaining from transporting prohibited objects in carry-on or checked luggage.
