Surprise Operation on Panama's South Corridor

Thursday morning several drivers got a scare on the South Corridor, when units of the Transit and Land Transport Authority (ATTT) set up a lightning operation at the Atlapa toll booth. Car traffic advanced slowly as inspections continued. ATTT warned that these surprise operations will continue to be carried out at different points, with the objective of detecting vehicles that are circulating without complying with the requirements of the law or with pending debts in the system. The checkpoint caught many off guard who were heading to their jobs. In a few minutes, the first irregular cases began to appear. Drivers with debts in the Panapass system, cars circulating without a license plate, vehicles without valid insurance, and others with expired licenses were uncovered during the review. Inspectors stopped one by one the vehicles passing through the area. Some drivers tried to explain the situation or justify the lack, but the corresponding verifications were still carried out. According to what was observed at the site, dozens of offenders were detected during the day. The scene made it clear that there are still those who use this fast lane without having their papers in order or with pending payments. The operation also caused momentary delays in traffic, while authorities reviewed documents and applied sanctions.
