Holy Week in Panama: Art, Faith, and Religious Tourism

During Holy Week, Panama's historic district becomes the meeting point for thousands of people, both locals and foreigners, who join the scheduled activities to commemorate the Holy Week. Between masses, rosaries, the tour of the seven churches, and the processions, people have a unique experience every year in the historic district. Holy Week in this historic Panamanian sector transcends borders and is an attraction to boost religious tourism, a scenario that is taken advantage of in other countries. Friar Javier Mañas García, who is part of the activities in the historic district's churches, highlighted that religious tourism is increasing in this "little corner of Panama." "As you know, a titanic effort has been made to bring to life this entire monumental complex, especially these seven churches, which form the historic district," stated Mañas García. "That encounter of man with faith, that gospel that goes out into the street, a living gospel in the form of sculpture, art, music, gastronomy, that encounter that goes out into the street to live those intense moments and, in the end, to live the most important thing of our faith, which is the Resurrection," he highlighted. For this year, there is a novelty: the float of the Last Supper. The Argentine priest emphasized that activities such as those developed during Holy Week in the historic district reinforce the faith of the parishioners. "It is an experience to reinforce faith. He also noted that each year an effort is made to innovate Holy Week. "This year we have the novelty that we will have two new floats. One, which is the Last Supper, which will come out on Holy Thursday from 7 in the evening." The religious activities begin with the Friday of Sorrows (March 27) and extend until Easter Sunday (April 5).
