Fuel Tanker Fire Under Bridge of the Americas

A major fire occurred on the afternoon of Monday, April 6, 2026, under the Bridge of the Americas involving a fuel tanker, leaving at least four people injured, one worker missing, and causing the complete closure of this vital artery for about an hour. The incident took place in the La Boca area during fuel supply operations, according to preliminary reports, which likely triggered the fire that quickly spread and reached at least other tankers at the site. Aerial images captured by drones evidenced the magnitude of the fire, with intense flames and a dense column of smoke that reduced visibility on the bridge, forcing authorities to order its immediate closure in both directions. According to information released at the scene, among the affected were two units from the Fire Department, while a person linked to the company operating in the area was reported missing after the fire started. One of the most critical points of the incident was the possible damage to the structure of the Bridge of the Americas. Authorities and emergency units warned that the flames directly impacted one of the columns and metal parts of the bridge, raising concerns about the level of heat exposure and potential damage to its integrity. Specialists will now need to conduct technical evaluations to determine if the fire compromised structural elements, particularly in the steel areas that were exposed to high temperatures. Closure and reopening The bridge remained closed for approximately an hour, causing significant vehicular congestion, especially towards West Panama. Subsequently, and after improving visibility and advancing firefighting efforts, authorities proceeded to gradually reopen traffic, initially allowing the passage of trucks, buses, and light vehicles. The Fire Department executed a complex operation to prevent the fire from spreading to other tankers in the area, which could have generated a much larger emergency. Efforts focused on extinguishing the flames with chemical foam and cooling nearby structures in an operation classified as high-risk. Investigation underway With the fire under control, authorities will begin investigations to determine the exact causes of the incident, as well as the conditions under which fuel supply operations were being carried out at the site.
