Over 1.5 tons of waste collected in Mocambo River cleanup in Panama

During a cleanup day on the banks of the Mocambo River, organized by the Municipality of Panama, more than 1.5 tons of waste were collected. According to the Municipality, 40% of the waste was PET plastic, 30% disposable diapers, 10% plastic foam (expanded polystyrene), and 20% other materials such as furniture parts, coolers, and toys. «The large amount of accumulated waste is evidence of people's lack of awareness,» said Yarelys Gómez, Deputy Director of Resilience and Climate Change. She added that these waste alters the state of nature and impacts human health with serious consequences in the medium and long term. «Environmental resilience implies that with the corresponding adaptive help, we humans can help ecosystems in their regeneration; we can recover the Mocambo River,» she said.
