U.S. Navy Admiral Alvin Holsey, commander of U.S. Southern Command, arrived in Panama to strengthen security cooperation and address critical challenges for the region. During his visit, Holsey will hold meetings with Panamanian authorities, such as the Minister of Public Security of Panama, Frank Abrego, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Javier Martínez-Acha.
The main goal of this visit is to consolidate security collaboration between the U.S. and Panama and discuss key issues, such as protection against external influence on the canal, specifically from the Chinese Communist Party. Panama remains one of the most relevant strategic allies of the United States in the region, maintaining a strong bilateral partnership.
This is the first time Admiral Holsey visits Panama since he took command of Southern Command in November 2024. During his stay, he will also meet with the administrator of the Panama Canal, Ricaurte Vázquez, to discuss the strategic importance of this interoceanic route and possible areas of cooperation.
On Admiral Holsey's agenda, the issue of alleged Chinese interference in the Canal area will be addressed, as well as collaborative efforts to tackle the crisis of illegal migration in the region. This meeting highlights the strong relationship between both countries and their shared commitment to democratic principles.
