Panama's Chancellor, Javier Martinez-Acha, rejected criticism for the lack of transparency and the absence of a comprehensive strategy following the signing of a security agreement with the U.S. The agreement has been very controversial in the country, especially amid the crisis over the inter-oceanic canal.
Martinez-Acha stated: "First, it is important to highlight that we have acted transparently and consciously in the negotiation of this agreement. We are committed to ensuring the security of our country and the region, and this alliance with the U.S. is part of that strategic vision."
Former President Ricardo Martinelli, for his part, referred to his difficult situation of confinement in the Nicaraguan embassy and requested the approval of the amnesty project to be able to return to Panama. Martinelli expressed his desire for the amnesty to be approved so he can return to the country and resolve his pending legal issues.
