Panama: Drug Trafficking Ring Using Airport for European Shipments Dismantled

Panama's National Police has arrested 59 individuals suspected of an international drug trafficking ring. The group used Tocumen International Airport to ship drugs to Europe. The operation seized firearms, ammunition, and cash.

According to authorities, criminal groups used Panama as a bridge for sending drugs to the European continent via commercial cargo and passenger flights, with France, Spain, and the Netherlands being the main destinations. Following the results of these actions, the National Police reiterates its commitment to the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking, and assures that operations will continue in strategic areas to prevent the use of the country as a bridge for drug trafficking. The National Police reported that a total of 59 people, nationals and foreigners, were apprehended during operations “Eros” and “Colibrí” for their alleged involvement in a network dedicated to international drug trafficking. Additionally, they used passengers' luggage, removing its tags and replacing them with tags on luggage containing drugs. In these operations, more than 60 search warrants were carried out in the provinces of Panama, West Panama, Veraguas, and Herrera, also achieving the seizure of 10 firearms, over 200 ammunition rounds, and $39,965 in cash. The investigations, which lasted more than 22 months, revealed that members of this organization held key positions within Tocumen International Airport, who participated meticulously and in coordination in the shipment of boxes, suitcases, and luggage contaminated with drugs, which they introduced as commercial shipments through companies.
