Panama Dismantles Drug Trafficking Ring Using Tocumen Airport

Panama. In a large-scale operation codenamed "Eros" and "Colibri," law enforcement authorities have detained 60 individuals on suspicion of involvement in a criminal organization engaged in international drug trafficking. According to the Public Ministry, the group has been operating since January 2023, moving approximately 300 kilograms of cocaine within the country and abroad. Their primary method involved swapping suitcases at Tocumen International Airport to clandestinely transport drugs to Europe. Among the detainees are airport employees, taxi drivers, mechanics, barbers, and fast-food restaurant owners. During a court hearing, 59 of the 60 detentions were deemed legal, while one was overturned due to insufficient grounds. Tomorrow, the court will consider precautionary measures, which will determine which suspects remain in custody and who will be released on bail.
