Recall Fails: Panama Mayor Strengthens Position

The capital mayor, Mayer Mizrachi, consolidated his management after the failure of the recall process promoted by opponents through signature collection. The initiative sought to remove him from the mayoralty of Panama, but it failed to achieve the citizen support required by law. According to official figures from the Electoral Tribunal, only 66 signatures were accepted out of the 217,322 necessary, a request submitted by José Clemente Guardia Bernal. The figure represents just 0.03% of the total required, far from the minimum threshold to activate the recall process. The result reflects that the majority of citizens in the capital district did not join the initiative, which politically strengthens Mizrachi's administration after its first year in office. The collection period extended for 120 calendar days, a period granted by the Electoral Tribunal to complete the democratic process. 'Mandate recall in Panama is a legal mechanism that allows citizens to decide on the permanence of a popularly elected authority. It can be carried out through direct voting, signature collection, or a combination of both, as long as the requirements established by electoral law are met.'
