Panama has been named one of the 15 finalists in the international Tunnel Vision Challenge. The announcement was made by The Boring Company, owned by Elon Musk. Panama is the only city outside the United States to advance to the final round with its proposal for a pedestrian tunnel under the Panama Canal. After the winner is announced on March 23, the construction of the winning project will begin at no cost to the chosen city. Upon hearing the news, Panama City Mayor Mayer Mizrachi reacted on social media, writing, "We did it!" and highlighting that the country is back in the international conversation. The proposal, for a pedestrian tunnel under the canal, would be developed for free by the organizing company. This places Panama in an elite group, competing with major U.S. cities that also submitted their ideas. On March 23, it will be announced whether the tunnel under the canal will move from paper to construction.
