Panamanian authorities are running a program for the voluntary surrender of weapons and ammunition in exchange for essential goods. The initiative aims to reduce the level of violence in the country and has already shown high results.

The Government of the Province of Panama announced that on April 13, the program "Weapons and Ammunition for Food, Medicine, and Household Appliances" will be held at El Polvorín Park, located in 5 de Mayo Square. The initiative aims to reduce the circulation of firearms. Supported by security agencies, the program encourages people to hand in weapons and ammunition in exchange for vouchers for food, medicine, and household appliances as part of a strategy to reduce violence in the country. "Taking a weapon out of the hands of someone with bad intentions and giving them something in return is the most effective measure so far," the official emphasized. During 2025, the program removed 1,142 weapons and 95,508 ammunition from the streets, with an investment of B/. 329,465.00 in vouchers distributed, reflecting the reach of this measure promoted by the authorities. The event will be held at an accessible location to facilitate public participation. The Governor of the Province of Panama, Mayín Correa, highlighted that this program has proven to be an effective tool.
