Panama's Minister Discusses Vía España Development Project

The project for the new road layout of Vía España was widely addressed this Monday during the appearance of the Minister of the Ministry of Public Works (MOP), José Luis Andrade, before the Commerce Commission of the National Assembly. Andrade acknowledged that the project does not yet have the endorsement of the Comptroller General of the Republic nor an environmental impact study, which is currently being prepared. The latter was one of the points questioned by the deputies of the commission. Therefore, the minister admitted that the project started 'on the wrong foot' and highlighted that the institution has taken actions after learning about the criticisms and reports. He emphasized that it is a beneficial project and that the entity is willing to hold meetings with the communities if necessary. In addition, he pointed out that the Vía España renewal project contemplates the permanence of the Afro-Antillean sidewalk in its current location, with suitable facilities for kiosks; he reiterated that the expansion of Río Abajo and Vía España seeks to provide tranquility to merchants and residents of the area in the face of infrastructure projects, guaranteeing dialogue.
